The Upper Aulaqi Sultanate ( Arabic سلطنة العوالق العليا, DMG Salṭanat al-ʿAwāliq al-ʿUlyā ) was a state within the South Arab Federation from 1963 , after it had briefly belonged to the Federation of the United Arab Emirates of the South from 1959 . Its capital was Nisab ( Niṣāb , also Anṣāb ).

The upper sultanate was the wealthiest and most powerful Aulaqi state; its ruler, like the sheik who resides further southeast in Yeshbum (see Upper Aulaqi Sheikdom ), always belonged to the Man tribe. In 1904, Sultan Awad ibn Salih (ʿAwaḍ b. Ṣāliḥ) signed a treaty with the British; In 1967 the sultanate became part of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen . Its territory is now part of the Republic of Yemen .
