Individual championship
Championship course
Start and finish were in the Eichsfeldstadt Heiligenstadt . A 39-kilometer circuit led from Heiligenstadt in an easterly direction through the towns of Dingelstädt and Leinefelde . The circuit had to be driven five times, so that the drivers had to cover 195 kilometers. Some of the roads were in poor condition and the course had numerous gradients.
Race course
On August 17, 1958, a varied race developed in the summer heat. By the fourth lap, a breakaway group had formed twice, one of which was able to pull out a lead of two minutes. Ultimately, however, the drivers were caught up again by the field. After the fourth drive through Heiligenstadt, the field of drivers began to tear apart. While numerous drivers stayed behind to the rear, a group of eight around Gustav-Adolf Schur withdrew from the front. After 160 kilometers, Schur and his club mate Bernhard Eckstein broke away from this group and after ten kilometers they already had a lead of 30 seconds. The Leipzig rotation driver Egon Adler tried in vain to organize a chase. Although they had come within 200 meters of the outliers in the meantime, Schur and Eckstein did not allow themselves to be caught and were already 1:30 minutes ahead of the field after 185 kilometers. With 200 meters to go, Eckstein was the first to accelerate, but Schur held on and finally won with half a front wheel length. After 1:46 minutes, Adler led a group of seven people following the finish line.

Team championship
Race course
Four weeks before the individual championship, the decision for the title in the 100 km team time trial took place on July 20, 1958 in the Brandenburg town of Lübben . The defending champion SC Wissenschaft DHfK Leipzig entered the race as the clear favorite . With Schur, Hagen and Eckstein, the people of Leipzig had the drivers who ensured the pace throughout the entire distance. In the stifling heat, they did not succeed in breaking the GDR record set by SC Einheit Berlin , but still achieved the best time, which was 3:30 minutes faster than the time achieved by second-placed SC Dynamo Berlin . The strength of the cycling section of the SC Wissenschaft was also proven with fourth place in the second team.
