GDR road cycling championships 1965
The road cycling championships in the GDR in 1965 were held to determine the champions in the individual road races for men and women as well as in the 100 km team time trial. Champions of the 1965 season were Siegfried Huster from SC Karl-Marx-Stadt , Elisabeth Eichholz from SC Leipzig and ASK Vorwärts Leipzig .
Men singles
81 athletes competed in the men's individual road race on August 15, 1965 in Zeitz . 35 riders had been nominated by the GDR cycling association, the rest of the field had been sent by the district associations , including the respective district champion. 173 kilometers had to be mastered on a 17.3 kilometer circuit with start and finish in Zeitz. The difficulties of the route consisted of the numerous cobblestone streets and a steep climb just before the finish line. After the second lap, a first four-man breakaway group formed, which, however, could not influence the further course of the race. After the seventh round, the four was eliminated. At this point in time, the field of drivers, which only consisted of 50 active drivers, was closed again, after having repeatedly made individual advances. At the end of the eighth lap, four drivers managed to break away from the peloton. When the spectators were already sure that the four would make the victory among themselves, Siegfried Huster , third of the previous year , stormed up at the beginning of the last round of Karl-Marx-Städter , sprinted over the quartet and won with 17 seconds ahead of East Berlin's Hans-Dieter Baptistery .

100 km team time trial
The decision in the team time trial was made on July 25, 1965 on the traditional time trial route from Lübben (Spreewald) to Peitz and back. The four teams of SC DHfK Leipzig and the four-time title holder SC Dynamo Berlin were named as favorites in advance . The racing weather was favorable, only affected by a slight headwind. The favorite Berliners had the handicap right at the start that their regular driver Eberhard Butzke , who had a cold , had to be replaced by Hans-Dieter Taufmann , and after just nine kilometers the Berliners had to cope with a flat tire from Lothar Appler . Surprisingly, it wasn't the DHfK four who benefited from this, but the ASK Vorwärts Leipzig team , which was 25 seconds ahead of SC Dynamo and DHfK at kilometer 25. At the turning point in Peitz, the ASK drivers already had a lead of 47 seconds, now ahead of the DHfK. The SC Dynamo had dropped to third place due to another puncture, now with Kurt Müller. However, the four were not discouraged and fought doggedly to defend their title again. However, the lead of the ASK team was big enough that Günter Hoffmann , Lothar Höhne , Klaus Kellermann and Lingner were finally able to save him eleven seconds from SC Dynamo.
