Athletic career

Taufmann began his cycling career as a student at SG Dynamo Potsdam, where the former professional cyclist Richard Huschke trained the next generation of cyclists. At the age of 18 Taufmann was promoted to performance class I, the GDR elite class. After he had completed his electrician apprenticeship, he was delegated to SC Dynamo Berlin , which was the performance center of the Dynamo sports association, which was subordinate to the GDR security forces . This gave him the status of a state amateur , which was associated with special support and material benefits. The Berliners used Taufmann at the GDR cycling championships in 1962 in their second team for the team time trial, which was runner-up behind Dynamo I. Dynamo II had set a world record, which was surpassed by the first team a little later. In 1965 Taufmann again took two second places for the SC Dynamo at the GDR championships, again in the team time trial and additionally in the individual road race. Before that, in 1963 he had won the GDR classic , the one-day race around the Hainleite . After his successful performance in the GDR championship, the GDR cycling association sent him to the road world championship in 1965 . As the second best GDR driver, Taufmann was 40 in the individual race. For the 1966 cycling season, SC Dynamo Berlin no longer planned with Taufmann, he was delegated back to SG Dynamo Potsdam. With that he dropped out of the sport sponsorship and could no longer start in the big international races. However, he remained loyal to cycling, from 2011 he took part in traditional races for the Potsdam team.
