action

1947 after the partition of India : The Muslim Mirza family lives in Agra . The eldest son Halim emigrated to Karachi , Pakistan , because he hopes for a better future there as a politician. Not so the younger brother Salim, who does not want to leave his small cobbler business and his home. Salim's eldest son Baqar supports him in his business activities, while the younger son Sikandar is about to finish his studies. The only daughter, Amina, is engaged to her cousin Kazim, whom she plans to marry soon.

But the stars are not good for the family. Business is bad and Salim is not granted a loan to bridge the current crisis. The reason for this is the resettlement of many Muslims to Pakistan who have not paid their debt to the banks. In order to survive, Salim has no choice but to sell the house. After a long search, they move into a rented apartment, which almost breaks Salim's mother's heart.

Baqar couldn't watch his father's business go downhill. He opts for Pakistan with his wife and son in tow.

For Amina, happiness seems far away, because Halim wants to marry his son Kazim to the daughter of a Pakistani politician. Now she lets herself into Shamshad, who woos her all the time. However, Shamshad's family will soon move to Pakistan too. Although he promises to marry her, he cannot keep the promise. Amina cannot bear this suffering until she finally takes her own life.

Sikander's future does not hold out great hopes either. Despite having passed his exams, he cannot find a job. At every job interview he is advised to try his luck in Pakistan.

After all the humiliations, Salim now also wants to leave the country. Only Sikander doesn't want to give up yet and wants to face the problems. On the way to the train station they run into a demonstration in which Sikander wanted to take part. They all protest against unemployment and discrimination. Salim doesn't want to stop Sikander while he orders his driver to drive his wife back home. He himself gets out of the carriage and takes part in the demonstration with the words to finally free himself from the isolation and face the new reality.
