National Film Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Film Awards (often also known as the National Awards for short ) are India's most prestigious film awards . The awards, consisting of a medal and a cash prize, are presented annually at a ceremony held by the Indian President . They are the national honor for all- Indian film , but prizes are also given for the best films in each of the recognized national languages .

The National Film Awards were first given for 1953 films to promote Indian arts and culture at the national level. The first award ceremony took place in 1954. Since then they have represented a counterpoint to the popular Filmfare Awards for Hindi films .

There are awards in the fields of feature film and documentary film . Two separate juries - originally from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Films Division , set up by the Directorate of Film Festivals since 1973 - select the respective winners. The prizes are sponsored by the Indian government and the directorate of film festivals in India. Over 100 films from all over the country qualify each year for judging by one of the juries if certain criteria are met.

history

The National Film Awards were introduced in 1954 on the recommendation of the Film Inquiry Committee headed by SK Patil and recognize films from the previous year. They were initially called State Film Awards, and have been given under the current name since 1966.

At the first award ceremony, three prizes were awarded: a “President's Gold Medal” each for the best feature film and the best documentary film, and a “President's Silver Medal” for the best children's film. In the second year of the award, 1955, separate prizes were introduced for films in the regional languages. Separate awards for artists and technicians have existed since 1968. An award for the life's work of deserving Indian filmmakers was founded in 1969 and named after the film pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke . In 1980 a prize was awarded for the first time for the best book on film, and in the meantime the section of the publications on film has also been expanded to include a prize for the best film critic.
