GDR road cycling championships 1952

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The road cycling championships in the GDR in 1952 were held in three individual road races in May and June. The double champion was Chemnitz Lothar Meister I , who won both the individual race and the team decision with the BSG Dwigatel Wismut Chemnitz .

Individual championship

The GDR champion in the single road race had to emerge in three races at the " Harz Tour " on May 31, at the "Through the Thuringian Lands" on June 7 and at the "Around the Landeskrone" on June 14. The master was determined according to a points system based on the placements in the three races.

1st run: Harz tour

The Harz tour with start and finish in Magdeburg had a distance of 214 kilometers and was held in great heat. There were numerous failures, including the entire GDR national team that took part in the 1952 peace trip. Already after 35 kilometers with Dieter Köhler from Eisleben and Fritz Funke Eisleben drop two outsiders. The chasing field fell apart on the first climbs towards the Harzkamm, several favorites, among them Paul Dinter and Rudi Kirchhoff , fell far behind. After almost 80 kilometers, a 15-man top group arrived in Harzgerode at an altitude of 395 meters. Thirty kilometers from the finish, the Magdeburg local hero Gustav-Adolf Schur got off his bike, exhausted, and a group of eleven riders took on the fight for victory, which Berlin's Heinz Jacob won in a sprint.

2nd run: Through the Thuringian countryside

41 drivers tackled the 200-kilometer second championship run "Through the Thuringian Lands". The route led from Zella-Mehlis via Meiningen and Schleusingen back to the starting point. After around 40 kilometers, the field on the Hohlberg near Friedrichroda tore apart, but came back together on the descent. On the way to Eisenach several drivers were hit with material damage, but at 130 km in Meiningen the field was back together. Then several attempts to pull out were started, which were initially unsuccessful. 50 kilometers from the finish, on the ascent to Mengersgereuth , Bernhard Trefflich from Thuringia managed to break away from the field. On his solo journey, he achieved such a large lead that he was no longer troubled by a loss of strength in the last few kilometers and he was able to reach the goal three minutes before his pursuers.

3rd run: Around the Landeskrone

Around the landmark of Görlitz , the Landeskrone , a 99 kilometer long course was marked out that had to be crossed twice. With sunshine and little wind, the racing conditions were ideal. After 30 kilometers there was the first breakaway attempt by Henry Thürke from BSG Dwigatel Wismut and Kurt Hünerbein from Aufbau Börde Magdeburg, who were later joined by two more drivers. Although Hünerbein had to retire after breaking the frame, the outliers were able to pull out a lead of 4:47 minutes after half the distance. A chasing group of seven athletes managed to break away from the field after 130 kilometers and caught up with the leading group 50 kilometers from the finish. A few meters from the finish in Görlitz, a group of five, led by Lothar Master I, stormed away. Gustav-Adolf Schur won in the sprint ahead of Heinz Gleinig and Lothar Meister I, who came in third to the maximum number of 23 points and thus won the championship title.

Team championship

The start and finish of the 100 m team time trial was Schwerin after a course to Grevesmühlen and Wismar had to be mastered. Hilly terrain and headwinds after the turning point made conditions difficult. The teams started with six drivers each. The teams from the operating associations of Dwigatel Wismut Chemnitz and Einheit Berliner Bär entered the race as favorites. While the experts expected the Berliners to be the winners, the Saxons decided the championship for themselves. The 44-year-old Fritz Funke was the asset of the Chemnitz family, and the first team of the Berlin bears, who were stopped by a closed barrier, had bad luck. They were being credited for the time they had lost, but their rhythm had been disrupted. They also had the handicap that their bearer of hope Werner Gallinge was out of shape. So they only finished third, behind their teammates from the second team. Defending champion BSG Aufbau Börde Magdeburg , who also competed with two teams, only ended up in fourth place with his first team, and they too could not cope with Horst Gaede's failure .
