Horst Gaede (born June 19, 1926 in Barleben ; † April 12, 1999 in St. Wendel ) was a German cyclist who was successful in the GDR in the 1950s .

Life

He initially started for the Grün-Rot Magdeburg association . In 1942 Gaede won the junior race “First Step” and then took part in other youth races until he was drafted into military service in the Navy. During the Second World War he was taken prisoner, from which he was not released until 1947. He joined the sports community Grün Rot Stadt Magdeburg and quickly became one of the best road drivers in the area of ​​the Soviet occupation zone . After he had achieved third place in the tour of the East Zone in 1949, he was accepted into the newly formed GDR national team in 1950.

With the national team, Gaede took part for the first time in 1950, like the GDR team, in the three-country stage race Internationale Friedensfahrt . The inexperienced GDR activists only rode in the midfield, and Gaede was also the second best of his team, only 20. He was also part of the GDR squad on the two following peace trips, but was unable to place 39 (1951) and 55 (1952) convince.

Gaede showed better performances in one-day races , for example with his victories in 1950 in Rund um die Hainleite , Rund um das Brandenburger Land and Rund um Leipzig . This brought him to the top of the list of GDR road drivers. His only title win was in 1951 when he won the GDR championship in the team time trial with a six from Aufbau Börde Magdeburg . In 1953 he appeared again with the win at Berlin-Angermünde-Berlin and sixth place in the GDR individual road championship. Later he only competed in standing races . Always active as an amateur athlete, he worked as a clerk in a Magdeburg construction company.

Private

After he had finished his sporting career, Gaede moved to the Federal Republic of Germany, where he opened a roofing company in Saarland in the early 1960s as a trained roofer . At the age of 72, Gaede died as a result of an accident.
