Puccinia sphenica is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the daisy family Baccharis sordescens . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. She is endemic to Mexico .

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia sphenica can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds emerging on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia sphenica grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia and aecia are unknown. The uredia of the fungus, which predominantly grow on the underside of the leaves, are yellow. Their colorless to yellowish uredospores are 23–26 × 18–22 µm in size, mostly ovate and spiky. The parts of the species growing underneath the leaves are dark cinnamon brown, compact and uncovered, they have golden paraphyses. The deep golden to clear maroon teliospores are two-celled, usually broad ellipsoid, waisted and 40–46 × 28–34 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 90 µm long.

distribution

The known distribution area of Puccinia sphenica only includes Mexico .

ecology

The host plant of Puccinia sphenica is Baccharis sordescens . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a development cycle of which only Telien and Uredien and their host are known so far; Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to her.
