Günter Lux

Günter Lux (born August 28, 1939 in Sagar ) is a former cyclist who was active in the GDR in the 1960s . After his racing career, Lux worked as a cycling trainer.

Athletic career

Lux grew up in Sagar, East Saxony, and finished primary school there in 1953. He then completed an apprenticeship in glass blowing in Weißwasser . In 1956 he came to the cycling and the Police Sports Association joined as a rookie first Dynamo Cottbus, 1958, the Sports Association (BSG) Lokomotive Cottbus and was retrained as a fitter. The first successes in the men's field began in 1959. He won a circuit race in Regensburg (Bavaria) and the Cottbus triangle race. In 1960 he was also successful at the Cottbus triangle race and at Rund um Dresden. After the 1960 season, Lux was delegated to the cycling club SC DHfK Leipzig . He drove his first stage race abroad in 1962 when he was used in the Tour of Tunisia , which he finished in sixth. In the years 1963 to 1967 he reached two second and two third places with the DHfK team in the GDR championship in the 100 km team race. He achieved the best placement in stage races in 1965 in the GDR Tour, when he was fourth in the overall ranking. At the road world championship in the same year he was able to occupy 46th place in the good midfield.

In the qualifying time trial for the International Peace Drive in 1963 , Lux drove the best time and was then nominated for the GDR squad. In this stage trip he had his best result on the 6th stage of the day with third place, in the final place he was team winner with the GDR team and came as the fourth best GDR driver in the individual standings in 18th place out of 84 placed drivers. In the Tour of Yugoslavia, he took 4th place. In the following years he did not succeed in qualifying again for the peace trip. His last win in the performance class was the 1966 Kowalit Prize.

After Lux had ended his active career as a cyclist, in which he won over 100 victories, in May 1967 on the advice of a doctor, he took up a degree in physical education, which he graduated with a diploma in 1972. He then worked as an assistant or junior trainer in the cycling section of the SC DHfK. In 1975 he was entrusted with the post of cycling head coach at SC DHfK. At times he was a member of the coaching council of the GDR cycling association . After the political change in 1990 , Günter Lux was dismissed from SC DHfK and then went to Saudi Arabia as national coach . From 1995 to 2003, Lux was the national trainer of the Austrian Cycling Association, then he worked as a training manager at the Südstadt-Wien performance center until 2007 .

In 1963 he was awarded the Bronze Patriotic Order of Merit in the GDR .

He is the father of Andreas Lux , who also started for SC DHfK Leipzig in the eighties .
