Wolfgang Braune
Wolfgang Braune (born September 2, 1934 in Halle (Saale) ) is a former German cyclist who was active in the GDR .
Athletic career
Braune already achieved a number of victories in road cycling as a student in Halle (Saale) , but later his successes initially waned. It was only when he moved from the Halle company sports association (BSG) “Motor Albert Richter” to SC DHfK Leipzig that the coaches there managed to develop his talent further. With his victory in the one-day race across Gera and further control races for the national team, Braune made a convincing debut in the men's field of GDR cycling in 1955. In 1956 he was still a substitute for the national team for the three-country stage race Internationale Friedensfahrt , Braune was able to prevail in the qualifying races in 1957 and made his debut in the Friedensfahrt. He achieved his best result with third place on the fourth stage, in the overall individual classification he came in 17th, with the GDR team he won the team classification . In 1959, Braune was again part of the Friedensfahrt squad, but suffered a severe slump on the 7th stage, the longest part of the day at 225 kilometers, and finally came in 26th as the worst GDR driver. Braune remained victorious in the 1961 one-day race in Berlin –Leipzig and at the end of his career with the GDR classic Rund um die Hainleite .
