Dieter Wiedemann (born June 17, 1941 in Flöha , Saxony ) is a former German racing cyclist who was initially active in the GDR and later in the Federal Republic.

Athletic career

His first victory in the performance class of the GDR came in 1959 at the road race in Frankenberg . Wiedemann, a fitter by trade, was already 19-year-old GDR champion in the team time trial with SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1960 . In 1961 he was third in the GDR Tour and seventh in his first international stage race on the Tour of Egypt . At the GDR championships in 1961 in the team time trial, he won another medal with SC Wismut, this time for second place. For the first time, Wiedemann took part in the three-country stage trip Internationale Friedensfahrt in 1962 . As one of the youngest of the GDR team, he finished the tour as the third best of his team in 17th place. He was second best in the 1962 GDR tour . Wiedemann, who now drove for SC Karl-Marx-Stadt after the dissolution of SC Wismut , could not qualify for the Peace Tour in 1963, but took part in the Tour of Austria and came in tenth there. In 1964 he made his second peace trip . After initially having to be content with only midfield positions, he moved up to third place after the eighth stage and defended this position until the end of the tour.

In 1964, Wiedemann used the Olympic elimination race in Giessen to stay in Germany. He settled in Schweinfurt , became a professional driver and signed a professional contract with the German cycling team Torpedo . In his first professional year in 1965, he started in the road world championship , but only came in 50th out of 56 riders. At the Tour de Suisse in 1965, after a third place in the seventh stage, he finished tenth as the best of five German drivers. After a year without significant placements, Wiedemann was 52nd out of 88 finalists in the Tour de France in 1967 . At the road world championship he retired early. In the same year he made his debut as a six-day driver, but could only be last in Frankfurt / Main. In 1968 he rode for the cycling teams Frimatic (France) and Batavus-Continental (Netherlands), but did not achieve any results worth mentioning.

Trivia

Wiedemann is the cousin of Wolfgang Lötzsch , who was considered one of the greatest cycling talents in the GDR.

On November 27, 2014, the Flöha City Council decided that Wiedemann should be included in the Flöha City Book of Honor. This entry was made during the city council meeting in January 2015 in the cafeteria of the Oberschule Flöha-Plaue.
