The 17th International Peace Tour (Course de la paix) was a cycling race that took place from May 9th to May 24th, 1964. The bike race consisted of 14 individual stages and led over a total length of 2246 km from Warsaw via East Berlin to Prague . The individual competition was won by the Czechoslovakian Jan Smolík , the team winner was the GDR . The purple jersey for the most active driver was won by Joseph Spruyt from Belgium .
Attendees
In 1964 90 riders from 14 cycling associations started. After the Lebanese Tarek Aboul-Zahab had taken part in the peace run as a single starter in 1962 and 1963, this year he drove with two Norwegians and Swedes as well as an Australian in the so-called "Three Continents" team, so that the field of drivers comprised a total of 15 teams . Compared to last year, drivers from Italy, the Netherlands, Morocco and Scotland were missing this time. The following teams reported:

Race course
The 17th peace run was dominated by the Czechoslovak driver Jan Smolik. The 21-year-old chased off the yellow jersey on the third stage, GDR newcomer Dieter Mickein, and defended it until the finish in Prague. Three stage wins and an average speed of 39.7 km / h also contributed to this. In the final standings, he was almost eight minutes ahead of runner-up Günter Hoffmann from the GDR. While amateurs from the Western European associations had placed themselves well again and again in the earlier peace trips, in 1964 the Belgian Michel Jacquemin came in 27th place as the best Western European.
The GDR drivers achieved all places in the top 20 and thus won the team championship ahead of the surprisingly strong Romanians. The formerly strong Soviet team fell further behind in third place from the previous year and this time ended up sixth, 20 minutes behind the GDR. While Belgium, England and Cuba did not make it into the team classification, three active members of the three continents team reached the goal in Prague, so that their team was still in the classification, but far behind as last.
