International Peace Tour 1951

The 4th International Peace Tour (Course de la paix) was a two-country road bike race that was held as a stage trip. It took place from April 30 to May 9, 1951 in Czechoslovakia and Poland and ran from Prague to Warsaw . The individual competition was won by the Dane Kaj Allan Olsen , the best team was the team from Czechoslovakia.

Attendees

71 drivers from twelve teams took part in the 1951 Peace Tour. For the first time drivers from Italy were at the start, while England was missing compared to last year. With the exception of France-Poland (five starters), the teams each had six drivers. The following teams started in Prague:

Paul Dinter , Rudi Fensl , Horst Gaede , Lothar Meister I , Bernhard Trefflich and Werner Weber started for the GDR .

From the Czechoslovak capital Prague to the Polish metropolis Warsaw, 1,544 kilometers had to be covered in nine stages. The longest part of the day was 222 kilometers from České Budějovice to Brno , while the shortest stage between Gottwaldov and Ostrava was only 127 kilometers. The second and third stages on Czech territory from Prague to Brno led through the heights of the Bohemian Forest , the remaining sections were mainly flat.

Race course

The 4th Peace Tour was all about the Danish driver Kaj Allan Olsen . Assisted by his two team-mates Østergaard and Røpke, he fought for the yellow jersey of the front runner on the third stage from České Budějovice to Brno and defended it all the way to Warsaw. He underpinned his success on the following sections of the day with a stage win and two third places. In Warsaw Olsen had a lead of 8:31 minutes before the surprise Second Lothar Meister . Of the 71 drivers who started, only 48 made it to Warsaw. Co-host Czechoslovakia won the team championship thanks to the six stage victories of its two drivers Jan Veselý and Vlastimil Ružička with a lead of 12:06 minutes over the GDR drivers. The GDR team managed to take the Hungarians ahead of them 1:46 minutes on the last stage.
