history
The first signs of a settlement on the site of today's Sochaczew date from 1138, when Bolesław III. Wrymouth died. A castle is mentioned for the first time in 1221. During the war against Lithuania, the city was destroyed in 1286. The granting of city rights to the place is not exactly known. It is certain that the place already had it in 1368. The award may have happened in the 14th or 13th century . In the 14th century, the estate of the Duke of Mazovia was built on today's castle hill. In 1476 the rights of the citizens were extended by Casimir IV and the place was now part of the Polish Empire. They were given the right to trade in Lubelski (the Lublin region ) and in Rus . In 1563 there were 211 craftsmen in 13 fields in the city, among which cloth-making played an important role. In 1590 a fire raged in the city and largely destroyed it. 1655–1660 the Swedes occupied the place and almost completely destroyed it. Up until the end of the Great Northern War , the city was ravaged by epidemics and fires and was again badly affected. During the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, the city came to Prussia . In 1807 it became part of the Duchy of Warsaw and then in 1815 of the Congress of Poland . The connection to the rail network took place in 1903. During the First World War , the area around the city was the center of bitter trench warfare between the Germans and the Russians from 1914 to 1915 . In addition to residential buildings, the church, town hall and train station were also destroyed. In 1926 a factory for artificial silk production, Chemitex , was founded, which existed until 1999. At the beginning of the Second World War there was heavy fighting between the Germans and the Poles in the Battle of the Bzura near the city . At the time of the occupation of the city, about a quarter of the population were Jews who were either killed or deported to concentration camps during the occupation .
