Andrzej Andrzejewski

Andrzej Piotr Andrzejewski (born May 19, 1961 in Sochaczew , † January 23, 2008 at Mirosławiec ) was a brigadier general in the Polish Air Force .

Military career

After graduating from the Officer's Aviation School in Dęblin in 1985, he was employed as a pilot before graduating from the National Defense Academy in Warsaw in 1995 . From 2000 he served in the first tactical air force brigade in Świdwin . In 2003 he was promoted to colonel and on November 11, 2006 to brigadier general and was given supreme command of this brigade, which he held until his death.

Shot down in 2003

He narrowly escaped death in 2003 when his Su-22 fighter-bomber was accidentally shot down during a maneuver. He was able to save himself with the ejection seat and was only found after an hour and a half search in the sea.

Circumstances of his death

On January 23, 2008, he was with other officers and members of the military on board a CASA C 295 on the return flight from Warsaw, where he and the other passengers had attended a conference on flight safety, to Mirosławiec. Shortly before landing, the machine crashed. There were no survivors.

Andrzejewski had been the highest-ranking Polish general for a number of years to die in the course of his service. He leaves behind his wife and two grown daughters. The Polish President Lech Kaczyński ordered a three-day state mourning after the accident .
