Detlef Zabel
Detlef Zabel (born February 12, 1933 in Berlin ) is a former cyclist from the GDR .
Athletic career
In 1948 - at the age of 15 - Detlef Zabel joined the SG Derby Pankow sports club . In 1950, Detlef Zabel won the very first race that was held at the Berlin winter railway races as a youth driver . In 1951 and 1953 he and his team became student world champions. From 1951 to 1957 he was a member of the GDR national team of road drivers. The task of the all-rounder was mainly to support the GDR star Gustav-Adolf Schur . In 1955 he started at the International Peace Tour and finished ninth in the overall standings, while Schur won. Schur and Zabel rode Diamant racing bikes . As a prize for his work, Zabel received an accordion (donated by the IG Food, Pleasure, Gaststätten Zwickau ), which he presented to the Course de la Paix cycling museum in Kleinmühlingen when it opened in 2007 . He had his best placement in a major national race in 1954 when he finished second behind Schur in the GDR road race championship.

Detlef Zabel is the father of Erik Zabel and the grandfather of Rick Zabel , both also racing cyclists.
Professional
Zabel completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith and was initially employed in a printing company in Leipzig. During this time he started for the association BSG Rotation Leipzig .
Trivia
Zabel was extensively examined by sports medicine in the GDR in the mid-1950s because he had an above-average heart. Several scientists used his example to comment on the subject of "athletes' hearts".
