The Schkeuditzer Kreuz (also: Autobahnkreuz Schkeuditz ; abbreviation: AK Schkeuditz ; short form: Kreuz Schkeuditz ) is the oldest motorway intersection in Europe and is located in Saxony in the metropolitan region of Central Germany . It connects the federal highway 9 ( Berlin - Leipzig - Munich ) with the federal highway 14 ( Wismar - Magdeburg - Dresden ).

geography

The cross lies in the municipality of Wiedemar and Schkeuditz . The surrounding towns and communities are Kabelsketal , Schkopau , Zwochau and Landsberg (Saalekreis) . The nearest districts are Werlitzsch on Wiedemarer area and Glesien and Kursdorf in the area of Schkeuditz and Beuditz in the Kabelsketaler area. It is located about 15 km northwest of Leipzig , about 20 km southeast of Halle / Saale and about 45 km south of Dessau .

The Saxon - Saxony-Anhalt border runs nearby .

In the immediate vicinity is Leipzig-Halle Airport, one of the largest cargo airports in Europe , from which the A 14 in the direction of Dresden crosses three taxiways between the runway and the terminal .

The new railway line Erfurt – Leipzig / Halle crosses the A 9 south of the A 14 in an east-west direction.

The Schkeuditzer Kreuz has junction number 15 on the A 9 and number 20 on the A 14.

history

The Schkeuditzer Kreuz was put into operation on November 21, 1936, but was not completed until November 5, 1938. It was the first motorway junction in Europe.

The original design was a complete shamrock with significantly smaller dimensions.

Design and state of development

In the area of the Schkeuditzer Kreuz, both motorways have six lanes each .

The cross is built on the basic principle of the clover leaf shape. Deviating from this, the connection from Dresden in the direction of Nuremberg / Munich is realized by a bridge (fly over), which spans the entire A 9 and connects to the A 9 in a wide left-hand curve.

Traffic volume

The cross is used by around 123,000 vehicles every day.
