history

Großkugel is of Sorbian origin, which is indicated by the place name and the layout of the village. The town center has the shape of a round shape open to the east . In old documentary mentions, the place names Großkubel and Großkaubel are used , which is understood to mean Stutendorf.

Großkugel belonged to the Giebichenstein office in the hall circle of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg . In 1680 this came under Brandenburg-Prussian rule as the Duchy of Magdeburg . With the Peace of Tilsit in 1807, Großkugel was incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia and assigned to the Halle district in the Saale department. The place belonged to the canton of Dieskau . After Napoleon's defeat and the end of the Kingdom of Westphalia, Napoleon's allied opponents liberated the Saalkreis in early October 1813. During the political reorganization after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the place was attached to the administrative district of Merseburg in the Prussian province of Saxony and assigned to the Saalkreis.

Großkugel was the end point of the first Prussian State Show built in 1788 , which led from Magdeburg via Halle (Saale) to the state border with Saxony. Originally the place was dominated by agriculture. The rail link between Halle and Leipzig was established in the 1840s. Due to its location in the Halle / Leipzig conurbation, close to motorways and major railway lines, the area around the town is now primarily characterized by commercial activities.

On January 1, 1957, Beuditz was incorporated. In the period after the political change in 1989 , several commercial and residential areas were created in the vicinity of the place. In 2001 the local Bikerfreunde Großkugel eV was founded. Since January 1st 2004 Großkugel belongs to the municipality Kabelsketal.
