The Hermsdorfer Kreuz is a motorway junction in the east of Thuringia , which is located near Gera . This is where the A 4 ( Aachen - Eisenach - Görlitz ) ( E 40 ) and A 9 ( Berlin - Leipzig - Munich ) ( E 49 , E 51 ) motorways intersect .

The cross is located in the area of Schleifreisen in the Saale-Holzland district . The surrounding towns and communities are Hermsdorf and Reichenbach . It is located about 60 km southwest of Leipzig, about 60 km east of Erfurt and about 75 km west of Chemnitz .

It represents an important traffic junction as there are important north-south (Berlin - Munich - Austria / Innsbruck , A 9) or west-east ( Belgium / Leuven - Netherlands / Maastricht - Cologne - Poland / Wroclaw , A 4) Connects axes.

The Hermsdorfer Kreuz is number 56a on the A4 and number 24 on the A 9.

history

The Hermsdorfer Kreuz has always been a trans-European hub. For centuries trade routes have led from northern Germany via Hermsdorf, Regensburg and Tyrnau ( Trnava ) to Rome and further into the Ottoman Empire .

It has existed in its current basic form since December 1936. It was built in the course of the establishment of the continuous motorway connection between the capital of Berlin and Munich. This makes the Hermsdorfer Kreuz the second oldest motorway junction in Germany after the Schkeuditzer Kreuz . Two kilometers west of the Hermsdorfer Kreuz, one of the largest reinforced concrete arch bridges in Europe at the time, the Teufelstal Bridge , was also built in 1938 . There are historically significant commercial inns in the vicinity.

In 1989 the cross was used by around 15,000 vehicles a day, and this number tripled after the reunification of Germany .

Remodeling in the 1990s

From 1989 to 1992 the Hermsdorfer Kreuz was rebuilt so that it met the requirements of a European traffic junction at the time. The renovation work cost 190 million German marks and was declared finished one year before the originally planned completion. Three new motorway bridges and a 2.5-kilometer-long noise barrier were built, and a total of 24-kilometer-long motorway section was modernized. On December 15, 1992, the converted Hermsdorf Cross was handed over to traffic.

Planned renovation and expansion

After the renovation in 1992, another renovation was expected from 2010. From 2010, further construction measures should follow which, in addition to adapting the connecting ramps, also provide for an expansion of the main carriageway to three lanes in each direction. In addition, it was planned to relieve the traffic routing from Erfurt to Berlin and Munich, as there are often major backlogs on the A 4 due to heavy traffic on the A 9. For this purpose, the new cross will be spanned with a new semi-direct ramp, which is to be implemented in two lanes, from the direction of Erfurt towards Berlin .

In December 2010 it was announced that the expansion would be delayed until the end of 2014 / beginning of 2015. The reason for this was a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists that was also included in the renovation work. The total costs should amount to 43 million euros . At the end of 2012 it became known that construction would start in 2020 at the earliest due to a lawsuit and the tight budget situation. A three-year construction period is expected.
