The Teufelstalbrücke crosses the A4 between Hermsdorf (distance 2 km) and Jena (15 km) west of the Hermsdorfer Kreuz over the Teufelstal in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia . The Teufelstal motorway service station connects to the west of the bridge. Today's structure consists of two parallel reinforced concrete arch bridges , each with a span of 138 m and a total length of 253 m.

The original Teufelstalbrücke was built according to a preliminary design by the bridge office of the Supreme Road Construction Management in Halle with the assistance of Arnold Agatz . The architect Paul Bonatz probably also influenced the final design . The structural advice was provided by Emil Mörsch , the proof of the stability of the reinforced concrete arches was carried out by Franz Dischinger and studies of the long-term behavior of the structure were carried out by Otto Graf . The bridge, which cost around 2.1 million Reichsmarks, was built by Grün & Bilfinger between June 1936 and August 1938 . At that time, the Teufelstal Bridge was the seventh largest reinforced concrete arch bridge in the world with an arch span of 138 meters and was considered a masterpiece of engineering.

The clamped arches were 7.05 meters wide and had a thickness of 2.8 meters on the fighters and 1.3 meters at the top. The stud walls standing on it were 6.75 meters wide, arranged at a distance of 11 meters and supported the carriageway slabs designed as two-legged T-beams .

Bridge from 1998

60 years later, from 1996 to 1998, as part of the six-lane expansion of Autobahn 4 to the south, another bridge was built parallel to the existing bridge in the same shape but with twice the spacing of the stud walls. This was done in almost the same construction as in the 1930s, with a wooden falsework . When it turned out that the old Teufelstal Bridge could no longer be renovated, it was demolished in 1999 , although it was a listed building, and replaced by a new bridge (north side) of the same type of construction by 2002.
