Gian Battista Mantegazzi
Giovanni "Gian" Battista Mantegazzi (born October 23, 1889 in Riva San Vitale , Ticino , † February 5, 1958 in Zurich ) was a Swiss composer and conductor .
Life
At the age of 11 he already played in the wind orchestra of his birthplace. The father, who otherwise encouraged him very much, insisted that his son should complete an apprenticeship as a painter first . During the First World War, Mantegazzi attended the Geneva Conservatory , later the Music Academy in Bologna , where brass music was part of the regular curriculum, which he left in 1919 with the distinction of "Maestro".
In Genoa - Nervi ( Italy ) he found his first job as director of the Banda Municipale and director of the music school «Giuseppe Verdi». In 1924 he left Italy and returned to his homeland, where he initially kept afloat by composing. In October 1924 he was elected director of the town music of Schaffhausen . From 1928 he also took over the Stadtmusik Zürich . Mantegazzi brought both wind bands to the highest level; there were also some joint concerts. From 1938 he worked as a conductor at the Harmonie Music Association in Thalwil near Zurich. Through his musical work and his personality, he had a lasting impact on the history of this ensemble from 1938 until his death. In 1941 he founded a large wind orchestra with 110 wind instruments and 30 tambours for the Swiss Army Game, which was dissolved at the end of the year.
In 1949 he received the honorary award of the city of Zurich for his work . He was also a teacher at the Conservatory, led conductor training courses at the Zurich Cantonal Music Association and was a popular speaker at specialist conferences. Mantegazzi was also very successful as a composer. His oeuvre includes around 250 works.
