Stages
The tour extended over 991 km with a prologue and seven stages.
Prologue: Erfurt, 2.3 km
The tour started with an individual time trial over 2.3 km. It was held on the Erfurt Juri-Gagarin-Ring .
Five kilometers before the finish in Erfurt's southern district on Hopfenberg, Mario Kummer broke up and won the stage. Matthias Kittel also broke up and secured second place. With third place, Falk Boden gained another five seconds time credit and thus moved up to one second in the overall standings on the leader Bernd Drogan .
Between kilometers 13 and 66, a breakaway group of six with Olaf Ludwig , Holger Massalski, Matias Vierke, Uwe Schlösser, the Pole Molik and the ČSSR driver Alipi Kostadinov determined the race. Later, a 14-strong group of leaders formed, from which Olaf Ludwig sprinted to win the day.
The fourth stage led around Waltershausen four times over the Großer Inselsberg and four times over the Heuberg. Halfway through the race, a group led by Thomas Barth was eight minutes ahead of overall leader Bernd Drogan . Drogan would have lost his yellow jersey. Drogan took up the chase on the third climb to the Großer Inselberg and caught up with Thomas Barth on the fourth climb to the Inselberg. Both were able to distance the other pursuers by more than two minutes until the finish. At the finish, Drogan left Barth to win the stage without a fight. The first main group crossed the finish line over eleven minutes behind. Thomas Barth had won most of the mountain classifications of the stage and thus took over Dan Radtke's green jersey with a clear margin.
The sixth stage over 109 kilometers ran without any noteworthy breakaway attempts. With seven kilometers to go, Mario Kummer and Frank Herzog pulled away from the main field. They only won 150 to 200 m, but since the field was divided and the last section led downhill to Erfurt, they defended the lead to the finish. Mario Kummer prevailed over Frank Herzog and thus won his third stage of the tour.
Bernd Drogan won the yellow jersey in the prologue and defended it until the end of the tour. After 1977, 1978 and 1979 it was his fourth overall victory in the GDR tour.
