Tour of the Eastern Zones 1949
The East Zone Tour 1949 (also: East Zone Tour or across the East Zone ) was a road bike race of the amateurs , which was held as a stage trip in the Soviet zone of occupation (East Zone) . It took place from September 9th to 18th. The winner of the individual classification was Max Bartoskiewicz from Berlin , and the team competition was won by the Berlin I team. From 1950 it was carried out as a GDR tour .
Preliminary remarks
The east zone tour was initiated by two Berlin cycling enthusiasts , the first chairman of the East Berlin cycling club BRC Endspurt 1901 Willi Vegelahn and the spirits manufacturer and cycling sponsor Paul Pöschke. Since Pöschke had previously mainly been involved in professional races , the German Sports Committee , the responsible sports committee in the Soviet occupation zone , rejected the organization of the tour by the two named, but took over the idea and finally ran the race on its own, since 1950 as GDR tour .
Route
The total distance was 1186 kilometers and was divided into seven stages. The tour began and ended in East Berlin and passed through all five countries of the Soviet occupation zone. The first stage from East Berlin to Rostock was the longest part of the day at 240 kilometers, the shortest stage from Chemnitz to Leipzig was 97 kilometers . The route profile was essentially flat, only two stages between Magdeburg and Chemnitz led over the Harz , the Thuringian Forest and the Ore Mountains .
Attendees
60 drivers from ten city teams started, 53 athletes reached the finish. The following teams took part:

Race course
The tour was clearly dominated by Max Bartoskiewicz from Berlin, who won the individual ranking with a lead of almost nine minutes. After the first stage he took over the yellow jersey of the front runner, which he then wore for all parts of the day with one exception. Only on the fifth stage was Bartoskiewicz's fiercest competitor, Karl-Heinz Hey from Erfurt , able to take the Berliner over four minutes away and win the yellow jersey with a wafer-thin lead of five seconds. Bartoskiewicz countered immediately and after a solo trip together with his teammate Heinz Weinert, he was more than seven minutes ahead of his pursuers and took back the lead in the individual standings. Bartoskiewicz also owed the Berlin I team for winning the team classification with a 20 minute lead over the Erfurt team, which had its top performers in Karl-Heinz Hey and Bernhard Trefflich .
