Route

The circular route was 1,285 kilometers long, was divided into ten stages and led through all five GDR countries. The start and finish were in East Berlin . Four mountain stages had to be conquered between Leipzig and Zittau . The longest part of the day with 216 kilometers was between Erfurt and Gera . On the 167-kilometer stage from Chemnitz to Zittau, the first 70 kilometers were held as an individual time trial.

Race course

Last year's winner Max Bartoskiewicz ( East Zone Tour 1949 ) could not compete after a fall injury. For a long time the tour was a duel between Rudi Kirchhoff from Berlin and Bernhard Trefflich from Thuringia , who already finished the first stage in places one and two. Kirchhoff wore the overall leader's yellow jersey for three stages before the tide turned on the stage from Magdeburg to Leipzig . A puncture threw Kirchhoff far back, so that he had lost six minutes on the previous overall runner-up in Leipzig. Kirchhoff finally said goodbye to the top group on the mountain stage from Erfurt to Gera , where initially a weakness and then a broken frame threw him back. Schärfster competitor Trefflichs was now Lothar Meister . Although Trefflich failed to win a stage, he was able to defend the yellow jersey as far as East Berlin and finally won the tour with a lead of almost 33 minutes over Master I. In the battle for the blue jerseys of the team classification, Saxony I won with the drivers Otto Busse, Rudi Fensl, Helmuth Lohse, Lothar Meister I, Rudi Pietzsch and Werner Weber with a lead of 26 minutes over the second Berlin team. In the course of the tour, 23 drivers dropped out. Among them were four representatives of Mecklenburg, so that this team fell out of the team classification.
