Route
The seventh round trip was 1244 kilometers long and was divided into seven stages. The route with start and finish in East Berlin only touched the southern part of the GDR in 1955. The first stage from East Berlin to Stendal was the shortest part of the day at 153 kilometers; on the fourth stage between Erfurt and Gera , the drivers had to complete the longest route at 201 kilometers. Two mountain stages were driven through the Thuringian Forest and the Ore Mountains between Erfurt and Karl-Marx-Stadt .
Race course
The two-time round trip winner Gustav-Adolf Schur entered the race as the favorite . He could not live up to this role, he did not win any of the seven stages and gambled away his chances on the first day when he reached the finish in the main field, one and a half minutes behind the stage winner. He achieved his best result with fourth place on the second stage, after which he only drove in a group and finally ended up in fifth place in the overall standings. At first instability shaped the tour. Before Dieter Lüder from SV Empor had won the yellow jersey of the front runner on the fourth stage as fourth of a 14-man leading group with a two-minute lead , a different driver was in front after each day. Without having won a stage, Lüder never gave up the lead in the overall standings and finally won the tour with a narrow margin of 23 seconds over Erich Schulz from the first team of the Post Sport Association.
In the team classification, all three sports clubs that started were able to maintain their position at the top. It was won by SC Einheit Berlin with its drivers Rudi Kirchhoff (7th in the individual ranking), Erwin Wittig (9th), Benno Funda (10th), Werner Malitz and Horst Tüller with a lead of 1:41 minutes. As the best team in a sports association, SV Motor finished fifth, behind the drivers of the North Rhine-Westphalia regional association (4th), over 37 minutes behind the winner.
