After no team winner had been determined in the previous year, the 1963 tour provided for a team classification again. Compared to the earlier round trips, the team winner in 1963 was determined based on a point evaluation, which resulted from the addition of the stage positions of the first three drivers.

The tour route began in Halle (Saale) , ended in Merseburg , had a total length of 1275 kilometers and ran in the southern area of the GDR. The longest of the eight stages led from Meiningen to Aue (Saxony) with a length of 227 kilometers . From Bad Langensalza to Löbau there were four mountain stages with nine mountain ratings. A 56-kilometer individual time trial was held between Aue and Annaberg-Buchholz .

After just three days, the first three places in the final ranking with Ampler, Bernhard Eckstein and Marks were taken. In the end, Ampler won with a clear advantage of 8:44 minutes.
