The XIX. GDR tour took place from August 8th to 13th, 1971 . It led over 762 kilometers with six stages. Overall winner was Wolfgang Wesemann .
After the tour did not take place in the previous two years, it was held as a rally for the first time in 1971. The start and destination were Cottbus . At 762 kilometers, it was the shortest of all GDR tours. Even with the number of six stages, it belonged to one of the short tours, together with 1966, 1972 and 1985.
Attendees
84 riders from four countries in a total of 14 teams took part in the tour. Eleven teams from the host country GDR started with DDR I, DDR II, SC DHfK Leipzig , SC Dynamo Berlin , SC Karl-Marx-Stadt , ASK Leipzig , SC Turbine Erfurt , TSC Berlin , B-selection DRSV, SV Lokomotive and Post Berlin . The ČSSR , Belgium and Austria were each represented by one team. In addition, there were 15 individual drivers from various clubs in the GDR.
Five drivers started per team. Only the DDR I team started with four drivers, as Karl-Heinz Miersch was out for a short time due to illness.

Jerseys
Four jerseys were awarded during this tour: the yellow jersey for the best overall, the blue jersey for the best team, the purple jersey for the most active driver and the white jersey for the best young GDR driver.
Yellow jersey
At the end of each stage, the winner received 15 seconds, the second 10 seconds and the third 5 seconds time credit for the overall ranking. On each stage, with the exception of the time trial, one or two premium sprints were made. For this, too, the drivers received time credits for the overall ranking.
Blue jersey
The stage team ranking was the result of adding up the times of the best placed drivers of a team in the stage ranking.
Stages
The tour stretched over six stages, including a time trial, over 762 kilometers. It was held as a rally. The start and destination were Cottbus . With the exception of the time trial, the finishings took place in the Max Reimann Stadium .
1st stage: Around the Forster Spitze, 140 km
The first stage led over 140 kilometers from Cottbus on several loops via Forst (Lausitz) to Gablenz back to Cottbus. A top group of 13 formed. In it were u. a. four Belgian drivers, two drivers from the DDR II team, but no driver from DDR I. The group continuously expanded its lead. Gustaaf Van Cauter suffered damage 40 kilometers from the finish, but fought his way back to the top group and tried to break away eight kilometers from the finish. Only Horst Brauer could follow. Gustaaf Van Cauter decided the stage for himself. Belgium took the lead in the team classification.

2nd stage: along the peace border, 155 km
At 155 kilometers, the second stage was the longest of the tour. It ran from Cottbus along the Oder-Neisse border via Bad Muskau to the turning point in Rothenburg / Oberlausitz and back to Cottbus. It was a stage with many advances. Michael Görke and Wolfgang Lötzsch achieved the longest solo trips with twelve and six kilometers. However, all advances were thwarted by the field and so the field reached the Max Reimann Stadium. In the sprint, Dieter Grabe from SV Lokomotive prevailed over the previous day's winner Gustaaf Van Cauter and Dieter Gonschorek from the DDR II team.

3rd stage: Through the Cottbus district, 145 km
The third stage was on the Cottbus - Drebkau - Calau - Luckau - Finsterwalde - Saadow - Calau - Drebkau - Cottbus route over 145 kilometers through the Cottbus district . After 50 kilometers, a 16-strong group with Manfred Dähne , Axel Peschel , Dieter Gonschorek , Wolfgang Wesemann , Manfred Radochla , Kummich, Wanzlik, Wolfgang Schmelzer , Mattner, Karl-Heinz Oberfranz , Horst Brauer, Weißmann, Wolfgang Fiedler , Bertram, Kubicek and Miloš Hrazdíra formed. Gustaaf Van Cauter , who wore the yellow jersey, and Dieter Grabe , who placed third in the overall standings, were not there. At kilometer 60, the group had a lead of 1:15 minutes. The pursuers put pressure on and at kilometer 85 a group of 15 chasers, Van Cauter and Grabe, fought their way up. At the merger, Axel Peschel came back straight away. After a four-kilometer solo journey, Miloš Hrazdíra, Dieter Gonschorek, Dieter Mickein , Michael Milde , Wolfgang Schmelzer, Mattner as well as Gustaaf Van Cauter and Ferdinand Peersman caught up with him. This leading group then gained a lead of up to 1:10 minutes. At km 125 she was overtaken by ten pursuers, among them Dieter Grabe and the two Belgians Michel Pollentier and Marc Demeyer . One driver later fell behind and so the group of 18 drivers and three minutes ahead of the field reached the goal. In the sprint, the previous day's winner Dieter Grabe won by a hand's breadth ahead of Michael Milde. Gustaaf Van Cauter finished third and defended his yellow jersey. The Belgians kept the lead in the team standings.

4th stage: Cottbus-Döbern-Cottbus (EZF), 40 km
The fourth stage was an individual time trial over 40 kilometers. It led from Cottbus to shortly before Döbern and back. Wolfgang Wesemann , who up until then had been third in the overall standings 45 seconds behind, won this stage by over a minute over Dieter Gonschorek and Miloš Hrazdíra . Gustaaf Van Cauter , who wears the yellow jersey, crossed the finish line in sixth place, 2:02 minutes behind. Wolfgang Wesemann took over the overall management from him.

5th stage: Around the Spreewald, 136 km
The fifth stage led on the route Cottbus - Burg (Spreewald) - Straupitz - Lamsfeld - Jamlitz - Guben - Grießen --Cottbus over 136 kilometers around the Spreewald . After 15 kilometers, the Belgian Gustaaf Van Cauter , who had worn the yellow jersey for three days, was involved in a fall and gave up the race. With strong, constantly changing winds, the stage was characterized by numerous attempts to advance. However, nobody could break away and so the field arrived at the Max Reimann Stadium closed . Dieter Gonschorek prevailed in the sprint. Manfred Dähne and Michael Milde followed on the seats .

6th stage: Through Niederlausitz, 146 km
146 kilometers were covered on the last stage of the tour. The route led through Niederlausitz via Döbern , Weißwasser , Lohsa , Hoyerswerda , Allmosen and Drebkau . At 62 km, Fielsch and Wittig pulled away from the field and after a good 20 kilometers had gained a lead of 1:35 minutes. The strength of the two outliers decreased and Dieter Mickein was able to catch up. After 107 kilometers, however, the field was back together. Two kilometers later, a group of eleven riders formed with Raschik, Karl-Heinz Oberfranz , Kühn, Wolfgang Fiedler , Wolfgang Schmelzer , Weißmann, Michael Milde , Kummich, Eberhard Reissig, Fielsch and the man in yellow Wolfgang Wesemann . Shortly before the finish line, Milde, Oberfranz, Fiedler, Schmelzer, Kühn and Wesemann blew up this group and took the places in that order. The field followed, just under 1:30 minutes behind.

Overall ratings
Yellow jersey (individual rating)
71 of the 84 riders who started reached the finish of the last stage. During the tour there were two people wearing the yellow jersey - the Belgian Gustaaf Van Cauter wore it for three stages, Wolfgang Wesemann for two. After Wesemann had finished third at the last edition of the tour, this time he secured the overall victory with 2:14 minutes ahead of his team mate Dieter Gonschorek . The Belgian Michel Pollentier secured third place on the podium.

Blue jersey (team)
All 14 teams started reached the end of the tour with the minimum number of drivers and thus made it into the team classification. After the Belgian team drove the first stages in the blue jersey, the second selection team from the GDR finally secured overall victory.
