Manfred Dähne

Manfred Dähne (born February 2, 1945 in Chemnitz ) is a former German racing cyclist who was active in the GDR in the 1960s and 1970s .

Athletic career

Dähne began organized cycling in 1959 at the age of 14 (after having tried volleyball and athletics beforehand ) and was active in both track and road cycling . He demonstrated his talent in both disciplines at the GDR youth championships in 1962, when he won the title in road driving and in the 500 m time trial on the track. In 1963, within a few weeks, he managed to move up from performance class III to performance class I for GDR road drivers. From 1964 the 1.72 m tall Dähne competed for the SC DHfK Leipzig in the men's division, having qualified for performance class I in a very short time. There, too, he drove on two tracks on the road and the train. In his first year in the master class he was third in the GDR championship in road team races with the SC DHfK, and he also won the title with the SC DHfK at the same championships in 1970 and 1971. In 1970 he also came up with the individual road championship Third place. At the GDR track championships, he reached five podium places in various disciplines between 1966 and 1971, with second place in the 4,000 m team pursuit in 1971 being the best result.

As early as 1965 Dähne belonged to the squad of the GDR national team and was used in the team time trial at the road world championship in 1965 , where he reached fifth place with the GDR team, in 1967 his team was classified eighth. From 1966 he took part in the GDR tour several times and in 1967 achieved his best result with eighth place. Also in 1967 Dähne was used in the three-country stage race Internationale Friedensfahrt . As the second youngest member of the team, he was one of the assets, won a stage, wore the yellow jersey of the front runner for two days and won the purple jersey of the most active driver. In the individual ranking, however, after suffering a slump on the 10th stage, he was the worst GDR driver only in 39th place. He improved by five places in his second participation in the Peace Drive in 1969 and won the with the GDR team Team ranking . Dähne's only overall victory in a stage was in 1970 in the two-day race Vienna-Rabenstein-Gresten-Vienna . In addition to his special qualities in the final sprint, he was characterized by an outstanding ability in the individual time trial. In 1970 he won all three time trial competitions in the GDR: he won in Kalbe, Bad Schmiedeberg and Lübben . He himself put his Palmares in 1967 on "about 80 victories in the GDR, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, the CSSR, Bulgaria, Algeria and the Soviet Union".
