The 1954 GDR tour was held from August 28 to September 5. The organized for the sixth time Tour won the Leipzig Gustav-Adolf Schur , in the team standings , the team won SV unit I.

The field of drivers of the sixth GDR tour consisted of 18 teams with five drivers each, so that a total of 90 active participants were involved. The GDR sports association unity entered with two teams, one team each sent by the sports associations activist tractor, construction, chemistry, dynamo, gallery, progress, locomotive, medicine, engine, post, rotation, steel, turbine, bismuth and science. In addition, there were the two West German teams from the state associations of North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg of the Federation of German Cyclists .

The tour was held in eight stages, start and finish were in East Berlin . The entire route was 1503 kilometers long and touched 9 of the 14 GDR districts . The longest stage was 217 kilometers from Magdeburg to Schwerin , the shortest part of the day was Bautzen - Karl-Marx-Stadt with 150 kilometers. The Erfurt - Magdeburg stage with the Harz crossing was the only mountain stage.

Race course

The sixth GDR tour was dominated by Gustav-Adolf Schur from Leipzig, who repeated his victory from last year, and the 1st team of the SV unit with their drivers Benno Funda , Fritz Jahresling , Rudi Kirchhoff , Werner Malitz and Heinz Sippli . While Schur won two stages, the SV unit won three days with Kirchhoff, Malitz and Jahresling. After the yellow jersey of the front runner had constantly changed on the first four stages, Schur took the lead in the individual standings after winning the fifth stage from Erfurt to his hometown Magdeburg, and did not give up the yellow jersey until the finish in East Berlin . In Berlin, Schur finally had a lead of 1:13 minutes over the runner-up Erwin Wittig from SC Einheit II. The best non-GDR driver was Heinz Ebbers from North Rhine-Westphalia in sixth place. His team fought for a long time with SV Wismut for second place in the team classification, which the Wismut riders finally won on the penultimate stage. The second West German from the Württemberg State Association also sold well with eighth place and left ten GDR teams behind.
