Georg Böhning , often also: Böning (* January 7, 1788 in Wiesbaden ; † August 17, 1849 in Rastatt ) was a German watchmaker and protagonist of the revolution of 1848/49 . In contemporary literature, Böhning appears predominantly in the spelling “Böning”, often as “the old Böning”.

Life

Born in 1788, Böhning first learned the watchmaking trade, but like many craftsmen, he soon came into contact with political ideas during the fall of feudalism . As a result, he came into conflict with the law and was indicted before the court in Usingen in 1841 , but Böhning was acquitted.

When the European revolutionary movement broke out in Germany in 1848, but soon came to a standstill, people's armed forces were formed to defend the threatened revolution, especially as part of the imperial constitution campaign of 1849, including the vigilante group of Wiesbaden as early as 1848 , where their commander Böhning also established the city's first workers' association co-founded. The Baden uprising , in which Georg Böhning took part , also fell in this late phase of the revolution . At that time, Johann Philipp Becker initiated a so-called “German Legion in Switzerland” in addition to the regular Baden People's Army, which was soon called the “Refugee Legion” because of the large influx of fugitive democrats from other German states. It was commanded by Georg Böhning, who was then 60 years old.

However, the revolutionary troops were overwhelmed, and because of his participation in these battles, Böhning was legally shot in Rastatt in 1849 .
