Joachim Rukwied (born August 20, 1961 in Heilbronn ) is a German farmer and agricultural worker . He is president of the state farmers' association in Baden-Württemberg . At the German Farmers 'Day on June 27, 2012, he was also elected President of the German Farmers' Association and thus Gerd Sonnleitner's successor . On July 21, 2017, he was also elected President of COPA-COGECA , the association of European farmers' associations.

Live and act

Training and own farm

After graduating from high school, Rukwied trained as a farmer and then studied agricultural economics at the Nürtingen University of Applied Sciences with a focus on business administration and a degree in engineering. From 1987 he became a partner in a civil law partnership (GbR) on his parents' farm in Eberstadt in the Heilbronn district , which at the time comprised 80 hectares of land and 25 dairy cows (for comparison: the average farm size in Baden-Württemberg in 2010 was 32 hectares, the National average at 56 hectares). After taking over the farm in 1994, he stopped dairy farming and in 2012 managed min. 290 hectares, according to other information almost 350 hectares, with a further 240 hectares (according to other information 285 hectares) leased area from the participation in an agricultural GbR. In 2019 Der Spiegel wrote about 350 hectares of its own land, for which Rukwied receives around 100,000 euros in subsidies from the EU. The main use is arable farming (grain, sugar beet, rape, grain maize), 30 hectares are field vegetables (cabbage, celery) under contract and 8 hectares are vineyards.

Local politics

From 1994 to 2009 Rukwied was a member of the Eberstadt municipal council and deputy mayor for the CDU, and from 2003 to 2009 a member of the district council of Heilbronn. He gave up these offices on his own initiative in order to concentrate on professional tasks. This also applies to his function as local chairman of the CDU Eberstadt.

Farmers association

Since 1993 Rukwied has been the deputy chairman of the Heilbronn district farmers' association. In February 1996 he was elected chairman.

Since 2000 he has been a board member of the state farmers' association of Baden-Württemberg , since 2002 managing director, on October 2, 2006 he was its president and re-elected in June 2010.

At the general meeting of the German Farmers 'Day 2012 in Fürstenfeldbruck , he applied for the successor to Gerd Sonnleitner , who no longer stood because of his age, at the suggestion of the Presidium of the German Farmers' Association and unopposed. He received 95.4 percent of the valid delegate votes cast. Since September 22nd, 2017, he has been the successor of the Dane Martin Merrild and President of the European Farmers Association.

Other professional functions

In 1989 he was co-founder and then chairman of the agricultural advisory service for potatoes and vegetables in the Heilbronn district. From March 1997 to spring 2006, Rukwied was the representative of the farmers and deputy chairman of the state brewing barley office Baden-Württemberg e. V. Since November 2000 he has been an honorary member of the association committee of Baden-Württemberg sugar beet growers, from April 2001 first deputy chairman. In 2004 he took over the chairmanship. He is a board member of the Association of South German Sugar Beet Growers. He is also a member of the Contract Vegetables Working Committee of the Central Horticultural Association . He is a member of the employers' group on the honorary board of the 2011 representative meeting of the social insurance institutions of the agricultural trade association Baden-Württemberg. Since 2007 he has been a member of the administrative board of the Hohenheim University Association , and since 2008 a member of the broadcasting council of the SWR and its state television committee, delegated by the state farmers' association.

Supervisory Board position

Rukwied is a member of the supervisory board of BayWa AG , the software company Land-Data GmbH and a member of the supervisory board of Südzucker AG .

Positions on Agriculture

Rukwied rejects the cultivation of genetically modified plants simply because he does not see any market acceptance among consumers in Germany. Research into agricultural genetic technology is to be continued. He rejects set-aside land , i.e. the temporary or permanent freeze on agricultural land, as a waste, and welcomes reallocations to production areas for energy crops. He rejects plans by the EU for so-called “greening” of its subsidy policy, i.e. an obligation to comply with certain environmental standards and to manage certain areas of land in an environmentally friendly manner as a prerequisite for all payments, as threatening the existence of the company.

Rukwied is married; he has a son and two daughters.

  • 2017: Dinosaur of the year : According to the Naturschutzbund Deutschland, Joachim Rukwied denies the responsibility of agriculture for the extinction of species and consistently trivializes all environmental problems for which industrial agriculture bears the main responsibility - such as the drastic death of insects and birds through the use of herbicides or the high nitrate concentrations in the groundwater caused by fertilizers. In addition, Joachim Rukwied persistently defends a subsidy system costing billions of euros, which is at the expense of nature, farmers and taxpayers and regularly opposes all measures to improve the environmental balance of agricultural policy. Rukwied announced in a statement that he was delighted with the award because many professional colleagues and members see it as an award.
