Life

Sonnleitner owns a 100-hectare processing plant in Ruhstorf in the Passau district , which has been family-owned since the 13th century . After completing secondary school in 1964, Sonnleitner completed an agricultural training and graduated in 1973 as a state-certified farmer and agricultural master. Sonnleitner is the son of the farmer Jacob Sonnleitner and his wife Juliane. He is married and has two children.

From 1991 to 2012, Sonnleitner was President of the Bavarian Farmers' Association . After he had been Vice President of the German Farmers' Association since 1994, he was elected as the first practicing farmer in the association's history to succeed Constantin Freiherr von Heereman as President of the DBV on April 8, 1997 and was last confirmed in office in 2009. At the beginning of July 2011, Sonnleitner announced that he wanted to withdraw from the top of the DBV and not to run again in the new elections in 2012.

In April 2011, Sonnleitner was elected President of the European farmers' association COPA for two years. He already held the office from April 2001 to April 2003. From 2007 to 2011, Sonnleitner was COPA Vice President. In April 2013 his term of office was extended until the completion of the CAP reform in 2013 and ended in September 2013. Gerd Sonnleitner was a non-party councilor from 1972 to 1993 and the second mayor of the community of Ruhstorf from 1990 to 1992 . From 1990 to 1995 he was also a district councilor in the district of Passau for a voting community and from 1992 to 1999 a member of the Bavarian Senate .

In 2001, Sonnleitner received the negative Dinosaur of the Year award as Germany's biggest polluter from the German Nature Conservation Union . The award was justified with his “consistent braking performance in the matter of agricultural turnaround”, which is reflected in, among other things, his “remarkably simple” lobbying work, his “constant litany against every reform step, no matter how overdue, from the Federal Nature Conservation Act to the ecological tax "And his" permanent no to improvements in animal husbandry and the reduction of pesticides and fertilizers ".
