Caratinga , officially Portuguese Município de Caratinga , is a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . In the 2010 census year there were 85,239 people in Caratinga. The population was estimated at 1 July 2019 92,062 residents who Caratinguenser ( caratinguenses ) are called. The urban area of the main town is around 16 km², the total area around 1258.5 km², the arithmetical population density is 68 people per km². The distance to the capital Belo Horizonte is 311 km. Caratinga is part of the Vale do Aço metropolitan area .
The community area has an unusual shape: three larger areas are connected by narrow corridors.
The biome is Mata Atlântica . Surrounding communities are Inhapim in the northeast , Imbé de Minas , Piedade de Caratinga , Ubaporanga , Iapu and Ipaba in the north-west, Santana do Paraíso in the north-west, Ipatinga and Timóteo in the west, Bom Jesus do Galho , Vargem Alegre and Entre Folhas in the south, in the south Raul Soares , Santa Rita de Minas and Santa Bárbara do Leste , Simonésia in the southeast and Ipanema in the east .
Local government
The executive rests with the city prefect (mayor). In the 2016 local elections , Welington Moreira de Oliveira was elected city prefect by the Democratas (DEM) for the 2017-2020 term.
The legislature rests with an elected city council of 18 elected local politicians, the vereadores of the Câmara Municipal.

Diocese of Caratinga
On December 15, 1915, the city became the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese Caratinga by papal decree .
