Ruy Castro (born February 26, 1948 in Caratinga , Minas Gerais ) is a Brazilian author, journalist and translator, best known for his biographies and reports.

He began his career as a reporter in Rio de Janeiro for Correio da Manhã, which was discontinued in 1974, and has since contributed to other newspapers and magazines from Jornal do Brasil and Folha de S. Paulo to Playboy .

Since the 1990s, he has concentrated primarily on writing books. His best-known biographies relate to the lives of the dramaturge and novelist Nelson Rodrigues , the football idol Garrincha and the singing and acting icon of the 1930s and 40s, Carmen Miranda . His historical treatment of Bossa Nova and the CR Flamengo football club also attracted attention . Other books are devoted to his adopted home, Rio de Janeiro. In the field of fictional literature he has only written a few books for young people.

As a translator, he has translated Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley into Portuguese. Since 1996, he has been awarded the Prêmio Jabuti de Literatura four times .

Ruy Castro's works have also been translated into numerous other languages. So far, only Bossa Nova (2005) and Garrincha (2006) have been published in German.
