Paul Katz

Paul Katz (born November 16, 1941 ) is an American cellist and music teacher.

Life

Paul Katz was a student of Gregor Piatigorsky , János Starker , Bernard Greenhouse , Leonard Rose and Gabor Rejto . In 1962 he took part in Pablo Casals' master class in Berkeley. He won competitions in Munich and Geneva and took part in the Rudolf Serkins Marlboro Music Festival three times . From 1969 to 1995 he was a member of the Cleveland Quartet , with which he gave more than 2500 concerts and made over 70 recordings a. a. at RCA Victor , Telarc International , Sony , Philips and Pro Artegrossed. He has received two Grammy Awards and has been nominated for the award eleven times. His recordings of the cello sonata by Ernst von Dohnányi with the pianist Barry Snyder and the string quintet by Franz Schubert with the Cleveland Quartet and Yo Yo Ma are considered outstanding .

In addition to hundreds of master classes, Katz gave summer courses a. a. at the Aspen Festival , the Yale Summer School of Chamber Music , the Perlman Music Program , the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Banff Center for the Arts, and the Steans Institute of The Ravinia Festival . He taught at the Eastman School of Music for twenty years , then at Rice University in Houston and, from 2001, at the New England Conservatory . The American String Teachers Association recognized him as an Artist Teacher in 2003 . He received the Richard M. Bogomolny National Service Award for his lifelong commitment to chamber music . The Eva Janzer Memorial Cello Center of Indiana University honored him as a Chevalier du Violoncelle . In 2011, Katz founded the internet portal for cellists CelloBello .
