Leonard Rose

Leonard Rose (born July 27, 1918 in Washington, DC , † November 16, 1984 in White Plains , New York ) was an American cellist.

Rose's Jewish parents were from Russia. He himself grew up in Miami , Florida . From 1934 to 1938 he attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1938 Rose received his first engagement with the NBC Orchestra under the direction of Arturo Toscanini . From 1939 to 1943 he played with the Cleveland Orchestra and from 1943 to 1951 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra .

Since the 1950s, Rose has been active mainly as a soloist and with smaller ensembles. His collaboration with the violinist Isaac Stern and the pianist Eugene Istomin is legendary . Her complete recording of Beethoven's piano trios received the 1971 Grammy Award for the best chamber music recording.

Rose was also successful as a teacher, teaching at the Juilliard School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music. His best known students included Lynn Harrell and Yo-Yo Ma .
