Gabriel Chmura
Gabriel Chmura (born May 7, 1946 in Breslau ) is a Polish-Israeli conductor , former general music director in Aachen , Bochum , Ottawa and chief conductor in Katowice and now in Posen .
Live and act
Since childhood, Chmura learned to play the piano with Adam Kopyciński , who was initially director of the Auschwitz men's orchestra and later took over the direction of the Breslau Opera and the Warsaw Philharmonic. In 1957, Chmura emigrated to Israel with his family , where he studied piano, composition and conducting at the Tel Aviv Music Academy from 1964 . He then continued his conducting studies from 1966 to 1968 with Pierre Dervaux at the École Normale de Musique de Paris and from 1969 to 1971 with Hans Swarowsky at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . At the end of his studies in 1971 he won first prize in the conducting competition of the " Herbert von Karajan Foundation" in Berlin and the gold medal in the " Guido Cantelli Competition" at La Scala in Milan .
Based on his references, Gabriel Chmura was appointed general music director at the Stadttheater Aachen three years later and at just 28 years of age was Germany's youngest orchestra conductor. After an extremely successful time with the Aachen Symphony Orchestra , he switched to the Bochum Symphony Orchestra in 1982 and to the National Arts Center Ottawa Orchestra in 1987. Finally, in 2001, Chmura was appointed music director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio (Narodowa Orkiestra Symfoniczna Polskiego Radia) in Katowice and held this position until 2007.
In the meantime, Chmura has been invited to numerous guest appearances and concert engagements with renowned orchestras worldwide. He has conducted the Berlin and Nuremberg Philharmonics , the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of France and the La Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM (OFUNAM) in Mexico City. In addition to his engagement with the Polish radio orchestra, Chmura also worked in Poland with the Krakow and Poznan Philharmonics, as well as the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Warsaw Opera, with whom he recently made new recordings of Gaunod's Faust and Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann .
There are also numerous CD recordings with, among others, the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester . Gabriel Chmura was honored with the "Grand Prix du Disque Mondial de Montreux" as well as with "The best choice" of the "American Record Guide" and a "Canadian JUNO Award " for his recordings, among others, of Schubert's Oratorio Lazarus with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra " - Nomination for the recording of Haydn's 6th , 7th and 8th symphonies with the National Arts Center Orchestra.
