Othmar Mága (born June 30, 1929 in Brno , Czechoslovakia ; † January 28, 2020 in Kiel ) was a German conductor .

Life

Othmar Mága was born to German-Hungarian parents in Brno in Moravia . He completed violin and conducting studies in Stuttgart (1948–52), studied musicology and German literature at the University of Tübingen (1952–58) and completed his conducting training with Paul van Kempen (1954–55), Ferdinand Leitner (opera) and Sergiu Celibidache (1960-62).

Mága was chief conductor in Göttingen (1963–1967), Nuremberg (1968–1970) and 1971–1982 general music director of the city of Bochum ( Bochumer Symphoniker ); During this time he took on a professorship at the Folkwang University of Music in Essen.

From 1983 to 1987 Mága was chief conductor of the Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan / Italy, in Odense / Denmark (1987–91) and from 1992 to the end of 1996 director of the Symphony Orchestra of the Korean State Radio (KBS) in Seoul. From 2002 to 2003 he was acting GMD director of the Niederrheinische Symphoniker at the United City Theaters of Krefeld and Mönchengladbach .

For many years, Mága was a renowned guest conductor of leading orchestras in Europe, Asia and America. He made numerous records, radio and television productions at home and abroad. After more than 60 years of conducting practice, Mága's repertoire comprised well over 2,000 works, music from the Renaissance to works by contemporary composers and numerous operas.

Othmar Mága lived for a few years with his wife in Grebenau - Merlos. Both were involved in the musical development of young people in the Vogelsberg district .
