Bohdan Wodiczko

Bohdan Wodiczko (born July 2, 1911 in Warsaw ; † May 12, 1985 there ) was a Polish conductor and music teacher .

Wodiczko first had violin lessons at the Fryderyk Chopin Music School and from 1929 piano and horn lessons at the Warsaw Conservatory . In 1932 he went to Prague, where he studied composition with Jaroslav Křička and conducting with Metod Doležil and also attended courses with Václav Talich . From 1935 he continued his training in composition with Piotr Rytel and studied conducting at the Warsaw Conservatory from 1936 to 1939 with Valerian Bierdiajew .

During the Second World War, Wodiczko played in the orchestra of the Warsaw Adriatic Nightclub. After the war he organized the Police Symphony Orchestra in Otwock, which he directed for some time, and taught at the Karol Kurpiński Music School in Warsaw. From 1946 to 1950 he led the orchestra of the Filharmonia Bałtycka in Gdansk, from 1947 to 1949 he was musical director of the Polish Radio in Gdansk and taught at the Sopot Music Academy.

From 1950 he was a teacher at the State Academy of Music and conductor of the National Philharmonic in Łódź, from 1951 and 1953 the same in Krakow. From 1955 to 1958 he undertook concert tours through Great Britain, Belgium and West Germany as artistic director and conductor of the Warsaw National Philharmonic . He continued teaching at the music academies in Warsaw and Poznan.

As the conductor of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra in Reykjavík, he performed compositions by Stanisław Moniuszko , Frédéric Chopin and Mieczysław Karłowicz and conducted a complete recording of Moniuszko's opera Halka for the radio. From 1961 to 1965 Wodiczko was artistic director and chief conductor of the Warsaw Opera , where he performed operas and ballets by Igor Stravinsky , Giuseppe Verdi , Stanislaw Moniuszko, Richard Strauss , Béla Bartók , Luigi Dallapiccola and Luigi Nono .

From 1965 to Wodiczko again directed the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, after which he became director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio . From 1972 to 1978 he was professor at the State Academy of Music (the former Conservatory, today Fryderyk Chopin University of Music ), from 1977 to 1979 he was also director and artistic director of the Teatr Wielki in Łódź. For his services he was awarded the Icelandic Order of the Falcons in 1968 and the Prize of the Polish Composers' Association in 1975.
