history
The orchestra was originally formed in 1945 as the “Municipal Symphony Orchestra” based in Sopot . After nationalization in 1949, it was renamed the "State Baltic Philharmonic". After the merger with opera studies, the "State Baltic Opera and Philharmonic" was created. The Philharmonie has been independent again since 1993.
The building in which the Baltic Philharmonic is located today was built between 1897 and 1898 as a power station with a neo-Gothic facade. After the plant was shut down in 1996, it was subsequently set up as a concert hall between 1996 and 2002. The first concert in the house took place in 2002 in the "Chamber Music Hall", after which the building was gradually completed by 2006.
The large concert hall has 1,100 seats. The organist and director of the Oliva International Organ Music Festival , Roman Perucki, was the general director until 2008 . In 2008 Kai Bumann, born in Berlin in 1961, became the artistic director. Bumann was artistic director of the Kraków Opera in the 1997/1998 season .
