Piotr Rytel

Piotr Rytel (born May 16, 1884 in Vilnius , † January 2, 1970 in Warsaw ) was a Polish composer , music teacher and critic .

Life

Rytel studied piano with Aleksander Michałowski and composition with Zygmunt Noskowski at the Warsaw Music Institute from 1903 to 1908 . He took part in the competition for the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in 1911 with the symphonic poem Sen Dantego . From 1911 to 1939 he taught harmony and form theory and piano at the Warsaw Music Institute, and from 1932 he was also professor of composition. In addition, from 1932 to 1939 he was a member of the artistic and scientific management of the Warsaw Conservatory (the former Warsaw Music Institute).

During the Second World War Rytel taught at the Stanisław Kazuro underground conservatory . From 1945 to 1948 he directed a composition class at the Higher State Music School in Warsaw (the former Warsaw Conservatory). Here Tadeusz Baird , Włodzimierz Kotoński and Andrzej Markowski were among his students. In addition, he was director of opera performances from 1945 to 1948 and director of the State Music Institute from 1946 to 1947 as well as vice-rector of the Higher State Music School in Warsaw.

From 1956 to 1961 Rytel was the rector of the music college in Sopot. In addition to his teaching activities, Rytel was active as the author of articles, feature pages and reviews for various Polish music magazines from 1908 to the 1960s. He was a board member of the Association of Contemporary Polish Composers (1925–1933) and Vice President of the Association of Music and Theater Reporters (1925–1935), Vice President of the Fryderyk Chopin Society (1947–1955), President of the Warsaw Music Society (1948–1952) and member of the Polish Composers Association.

In 1937 he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta , and in 1960 the City of Gdansk Prize.
