Kate Barry

Kate Barry (born April 8, 1967 in London , † December 11, 2013 in Paris ) was a British photographer .

life and work

Kate Barry was the daughter of actress and singer Jane Birkin and composer John Barry . She was the eldest of the three Birkin daughters, half-sister of Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon . After her parents separated in 1967, she grew up under the care of her mother and her partner Serge Gainsbourg until they in turn separated.

She initially aspired to become a fashion designer and began studying at the École de la chambre syndicale de la couture parisienne . However, she became ill with alcohol and drug addiction . After the birth of her son Roman, she freed herself from her addiction in a special clinic in London. Following the example of Alcoholics Anonymous , she founded the Apte organization in 1993 ( Aide et prévention des toxico-dépendances par l'entraide ).

At the age of 28 she turned to photography. She portrayed numerous actresses and actors, including her sister Charlotte, Elsa Zylberstein , Audrey Tautou and Catherine Deneuve . She created portraits and fashion photographs for fashion magazines and newspapers such as Vogue , Elle , Paris Match , Le Figaro Madame . She photographed for advertising campaigns. Recordings of her adorn the covers of CDs by Calogero and Carla Bruni . But she also took photos outside the fashion world, for example portraying landscapes and the faces of the workers in the Rungis market .

Kate Barry never took French citizenship. Together with Jean Rolin she wrote an autobiographical book about the city of Dinard : Dinard. Essai d′autobiographie immobilière .

In September 2013 the Galerie Cinéma opened in Paris with the exhibition Point of View , which showed all facets of Kate Barry's work. The gallery owner Anne-Dominique Toussaint met Kate Barry while shooting the film Jacky ou le royaume des filles by Riad Sattouf , where Barry took photos on the set . Toussaint wrote of Barry:

On December 11, 2013, Kate Barry died of a fall from the window of her Paris apartment on the fourth floor. The apartment was locked from the inside and she was alone in it.

The French Minister of Culture Aurélie Filippetti paid tribute in her obituary ...:
