Calogero (born July 30, 1971 in Échirolles near Grenoble ; full name Calogero Joseph Salvatore Maurici ) is a French singer and musician .

biography

Calogero Maurici was born in 1971 to Sicilian parents in Échirolles. As a child he began playing the flute with his brother Gioacchino, who was three years older than him . Other instruments such as the organ , piano and guitar followed later . Together they founded the band Les Charts in 1986 with Francis Maggiulli, a friend of their brother's . The trio was supported by France Gall . They released five albums between 1989 and 1997 and broke up in the late 1990s.

Already in 1992 Calogero could be heard as a background singer on Pascal Obispo's second album . From this a friendship developed between the two musicians. In the late 1990s, Calogero began to write songs for other performers, including a. for Florent Pagny , Ismaël Lô , Hélène Segara and Patrick Fiori . In 2000 Calogero released his debut album Au milieu des autres , on which his brother and his friend also participated. The producer was Pascal Obispo. It made the jump into the charts and also brought two smaller single hits.

breakthrough

2012 at the NRJ Music Awards

Two years later the second album Calogero was released, produced by Pierre Jaconelli. He wrote seven of the eleven titles on it with his brother Gioacchino Maurici. It brought the breakthrough to number 2 in the French-speaking charts of Belgium ( Wallonia ) and number 3 in France. It stayed in the charts there for two years. It sold over a million times in total and was awarded a diamond record. Four songs on the album also made it into the single charts , the most successful being “En apesanteur” at number 13. In 2003 he was awarded the Victoire de la Musique as Artist of the Year . A year later he also received the NRJ Music Award .

Album 3 followed just a year later . This time Calogero produced it himself with the support of Jaconelli and Philippe Uminski. For the first time it came in first place in both France and Belgium . It was also successful in Switzerland and stayed in the Swiss charts for over a year , in France it stayed in the top 200 for two years and became the musician's second diamond album. With double platinum in Belgium and platinum in Switzerland, it was the Frenchman's most successful album overall. Face à la mer with the rapper Passi , the only guest on his album, was his most successful song to date, ranking 2nd in Belgium and 3rd in France. Si seulement je pouvais lui manquer was another top 10 hit on the album, earning it his second victory as song of the year. However, in a 2015 copyright dispute, a court found that the song was very similar to a composition by Laurent Feriol.

After his first live album in the summer of 2005 with the title Live 1.0 , Calogero withdrew to Tuscany , where he prepared the 2007 album "Pomme C". Pomme stands for the apple key on the Macintosh computer and Pomme C for the copy function . All songs were written together with Zazie . The album missed number 1 and although it was in the charts for two years again, sales of around 400,000 copies remained well below those of the previous albums. The stadium tour also turned out to be not as successful as expected. During this time Calogero suffered from depression and the separation from his partner, with whom he has two children. He worked on material for his new album throughout 2008. At the end of the year, the song La Débâcle des sentiments was released , recorded together with the singer Stanislas , which is his most successful song in the French charts at number 2. The album L'embellie was then released in spring 2009 and returned to number 1 on the album charts in France and Belgium. In Switzerland he was in the top 10 for the first time. C'est dit was his first number one single hit in Belgium.

New projects

The following year, the musician released his first official best-of album, which brought him the fifth number one in a row in Belgium. The special thing about Best of - version originale / version symphonique is that 13 old and one new songs were recorded once in the original version and a second time in a version with a symphony orchestra. He then toured extensively and also performed his songs in the orchestral version at several appearances in Paris. He then published recordings on CD and DVD.

After that he put his solo career on hold and founded the band project Circus together with Stanislas, Philippe Uminski and two other musicians . Her album of the same name was released in 2012.

Two years later, Calogero reported back with his sixth solo studio album and a new co-producer, British Alan O'Connell. Les feux d'artifice brought him back to number 1 in his home country after five years . It stayed in the top 10 for 30 weeks in a row and had already won its third diamond award. The pre-released song Un jour au mauvais endroit was his fourth top 10 hit and stayed in the top 100 longer than any previous single. For the second time he won a Victoire for Song of the Year, his third overall. In Belgium the album also reached number 1 and in Switzerland with number 6, its best ranking to date.
