Zazie (* 18th April 1964 as Isabelle de Truchis de Varennes in Boulogne-Billancourt ) is a French pop singer .

Zazie publishes her music under her own name, mostly writing the lyrics of her songs herself and working with composers. She also works as a lyricist for other singers. Her music is often enriched with techno elements and electronic vocal distortions, overall Zazie covers a spectrum from the newer French chansons to rock numbers, whereby the pieces recognize references to minimalist music , acid rock and trance through frequent repetition of the refrains in some passages to let.

Life

childhood

Based on Raymond Queneau's fictional character from Zazie dans le métro , she was already called Zazie as a small child. Her father, Hervé de Truchis de Varenne, was an architect and her mother, Jacqueline Caussé, was a music professor. In her childhood she was musically influenced mainly by Georges Brassens , Jacques Brel and Barbara . Zazie learned to play the violin, piano and guitar.

career path

After graduating from high school, she began training as a physiotherapist, then studied foreign languages ​​(English, Spanish and Japanese). For many years she worked as a model for large fashion companies, e.g. B. Yves Saint Laurent , Lagerfeld and Kenzo . Later, Zazie got the opportunity to sing in the background choir for a song by the singer Fabrice Guinar . After that, she also appeared on television as a singer. Thanks to her distinctive voice, she was hired for radio advertising such as Opel and Martini and for television advertising such as L'Oréal .

Musical career

It was not until 1990 that she made the decision to concentrate entirely on a singing career and in 1991 signed a contract with Phonogram . Her first album Je, tu, ils was released in 1992 , for which she wrote almost all the lyrics herself and also played a key role in the compositions. This album contains her first collaboration with, then little known, Pascal Obispo . The first single, Sucré salé, was very successful and gave Zazie the award "best new artist" at the " Victoires de la Musique " the following year .

Zazie's second album, Zen , was released in 1995 and sold more than 400,000 copies. She received her second award from the “Victoires de la Musique” for the music video for the first single, Larsen . She also began to compose and write for other French musicians such as Florent Pagny , Johnny Hallyday , Jane Birkin , Pascal Obispo , Patricia Kaas , Isabelle Boulay , David Hallyday and also Calogéro and Axel Bauer . Since 1996, Zazie has regularly participated in the annual benefit gala Les Enfoirés for the benefit of the Restos du Cœur founded by Coluche .
