The Time with Julien (Kung-fu master!) Is a French drama film directed by Agnès Varda from 1987.

action

40-year-old Mary-Jane ( Jane Birkin ) watches a boy of the same age, Julien ( Mathieu Demy ) , at a party of her 15-year-old daughter Lucy ( Charlotte Gainsbourg ). Julien is a bit small for his age and tries to compensate for this lack with cheekiness and coolness. Mary-Jane is fascinated by him. This condition increases with further meetings. While Julien is open to Mary-Jane, Mary-Jane is torn between amorous feelings and a motherly sense of duty. Ultimately, Julien spends the holidays with Mary-Jane, Lucy and their sister Lou ( Lou Doillon ) with their grandparents. Here Lucy also learns about the shy relationship of the unequal couple. Julien and Mary-Jane still spend a few happy days on a desert island; when they are back in Paris, the public is shocked and everything falls apart.

background

The story originally came from Jane Birkin's pen. The teenage lover (Mathieu Demy) is the director's son; Mary-Jane's two daughters Lucy and Lou are actually Jane Birkin's daughters (Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon). Jane Birkin's parents ( David Birkin and Judy Campbell ) and her brother Andrew Birkin also star in this film.

The arcade game Kung-Fu Master plays a role in the film.

Reviews

“Stylistically closed, humorous and sensitive description of an impossible love, which treats the provocative subject with respect for the people and takes over the point of view of the main character without moral judgments. A masterfully staged and played reflection on the contrast between two generations and the love of youth in the computer age. "
