The Belmond Copacabana Palace is a grand hotel in Rio de Janeiro in the Copacabana district .

The Art Deco style building was designed by Joseph Gire and built by business people Octavian Guinle and Francisco Castro Silva between 1919 and 1923.

location

The hotel is centrally located on the broad stretch of the Atlantic beach of Copacabana and Leme , which can be reached via Avenida Atlântica, the beach promenade . In addition to other hotels, there are souvenir shops in the surrounding streets .

Furnishing

The Copacabana Palace, formerly known as Orient-Express Hotels Ltd. Belmond owned well-known British company has 241 guest rooms. There are three restaurants and a hotel pool ( photo ) as well as a British-style bar ( Copacobana Piano Bar ). There are function rooms on the first floor, which together have a capacity of 1000 people. There is also a spa and shops including a travel agency and a tennis court .

Movie

The film Flying Down to Rio was shot in the hotel in 1933 .

Prominent guests

Numerous celebrities from culture and politics were guests in the hotel: Ella Fitzgerald , Marlene Dietrich , Orson Welles as well as Igor Stravinsky , Stefan Zweig , Henry Fonda , Errol Flynn , John Wayne , Ava Gardner and many others. The samba legend Jorge Ben Jor has lived permanently in the luxury hotel since 2018 .
