Sérgio Mendes (2008)

Sérgio Santos Mendes (born February 11, 1941 in Niterói in the state of Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian Grammy- winning pianist , composer and arranger . He is one of the most successful musicians in his country and, as a pioneer of bossa nova, helped this genre to global fame. Mendes' best-known recording Mas que nada by Jorge Ben made him internationally known in 1966. In the course of his over 50-year career, he has released over 35 albums.

Career

Sérgio Mendes received training as a classical pianist at the Niterói Conservatory, but became interested in jazz from a very early age . In the early 1960s he became the leader of the group "Sexteto Bossa Rio" with the musicians Paulo Moura on saxophone , Pedro Paulo on trumpet , Durval Ferreira on guitar , Octávio Bailly on double bass and Dom Um Romão on drums .

He performed at jazz festivals in France and Italy in 1963, toured Japan in 1964 and then settled in the USA. There he founded the group Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 and signed a contract with Herb Alpert's record company A&M Records . Mendes hired Alpert's wife Lani Hall as a singer . In 1966 he rearranged Jorge Ben's composition Mas Que Nada and recorded it on record. This became one of his greatest achievements and is often mistaken for Mendes' own work. The cover versions of Burt Bacharach's The Look of Love and The Fool on the Hill by the Beatles (both in 1968) were equally successful .

In 1971, Mendes exchanged the members of his accompanying group and from now on called himself Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '77 . In 1973 he moved to Bell Records for the LP Love Music from A&M. For another LP on this record label, Vintage '74 , he recorded three songs by Stevie Wonder . After several less successful years, Mendes made a big comeback in the USA - without Brasil '77 - with the popular ballad Never Gonna Let You Go (1983) (the song reached number 4 in the charts). He had signed another contract with A&M for the corresponding LP Sergio Mendes . In 1992 Mendes was awarded the Grammy for the first time , and his work Brasileiro was named "Best World Music Album".

Mendes played with many well-known jazz musicians and his music achieved great popularity in Brazil, the USA, Europe and Japan. One of his songs, So Many Stars , was recorded by many performers on the international jazz scene. This song is the "standard" in many song books.

In February 2006 the album Timeless was released . The first single released was a new edition of the song Mas Que Nada with rap support from the Black Eyed Peas . The piece became an international hit parade. The album was produced by Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, who rearranged and recorded many of the old hits by Sérgio Mendes and wrote some new songs. (In Switzerland the album can be found under the name Sérgio Mendes feat. Black Eyed Peas ). Other songs on this album were created in collaboration with musicians Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu , John Legend and Justin Timberlake . Mendes was nominated again for a Grammy and continued his comeback with the following albums Encanto (2008) and Bom Tempo (2010).
