Azymuth is a three- piece fusion jazz band from Rio de Janeiro , Brazil .

history

Azymuth was created in 1973 from the Grupo Seleção; the original band members were José Roberto Bertrami ( keyboards , † 2012), Alex Malheiros ( bass ), ( guitar ) and Ivan Conti ( drums ). Fernando Moraes replaced Bertrami on the keyboards. The band released their first album in 1975 under the title Azymüth and toured with Elis Regina , Eumir Deodato , Jorge Ben , Gal Costa and Milton Nascimento . She had her biggest hit in 1980 with "Jazz Carnival" and in the following years released a number of albums on the US jazz labelMilestone Records . Since the mid-1990s, they released albums on the British Far Out label. The musicians from Azymuth call their music Samba doido , which means something like "crazy samba".

Azymuth also produced other musicians and played in numerous other projects over the years. A well-known album is by the Brazilian singer Ana Mazzotti, among others, and another by Sabrina Malheiros , the bassist's daughter, from 2005. Many of Azymuth's compositions have been covered by very different musicians. Also remixes of her plays were produced, such as by Jazzanova .

In May 2008 Ivan Conti released an album with hip-hop musician Madlib called Sujinho.
