Tone Lōc

Tone Loc , also Tone Loc and Tone-Loc, actually Anthony Terrell Smith (* 3. March 1966 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American hip-hop - a musician , rapper , songwriter and actor , who above all by its 1989 hit singles Funky Cold Medina and Wild Thing became known. A trademark is his smoky to hoarse voice.

The name Tone Loc is derived from the nickname "Antonio Loco", which Smith got in his youth, it is often written with Makron as Tone Lōc. At the beginning of his career he was one of the first rappers on the American west coast .

biography

Smith grew up in a middle-class family and attended the Hollywood Professional School, where u. a. even Bobby Driscoll , Tatum O'Neal and Mickey Rooney students were. By guitar lessons and passion for radio Smith found his way to rap and was on completion of junior college member of the trio Triple A. As a solo artist he worked on the programming of computers and developed his rap style on. Tone Loc's first single On Fire was released in 1988 but was not a chart hit.

At the end of 1988, the second single, Wild Thing, was released in the US and climbed to number two on the singles charts . At the beginning of 1989 the song was published in Europe , where a. in the German (18th place), the Swiss (23rd place) and the British charts (21st place). The follow-up single Funky Cold Medina first rose to number 3 in the United States in the spring of 1989, a short time later also to the charts in Germany (number 7) as well as in Austria , Switzerland and the United Kingdom (all three number 13). Wild Thing was in the US with double platinum , Funky Cold Medina certified platinum.

The album Lōc'ed After Dark , on which the previous hit singles are included, went on sale in March of that year, reached number 1 on the American Billboard charts and got double platinum for it. There was also great success in Europe. There the record climbed into the German Top 20, the Austrian Top 10 as well as the Swiss and British Top 30. With I Got It Goin 'On , another release followed in late summer, which only made it into the singles hit parade in the UK.

Cool Hand Lōc is the name of the 1991 released second studio album, with which Tone Lōc could not build on the success of its predecessor. Apart from a one-week stay in Austria's album charts (39th place), the longplayer was unable to assert itself in the international charts. The release All Through the Night only climbed a lower position in the USA (80th place).

A few singles were released up to 1994, including remixes of the two biggest hits. Funky Cold Medina 'Y2k , a mix of the brothers Alex and Stephan Zind from Frankfurt , under the name ZZ Bros. produced reached 1999, the German and Austrian Top 40. For more chart success did not exist.

In addition to music, Tone Lōc is also known as an actor in the films Ace Ventura - An Animal Detective , Posse - The Revenge of Jessie Lee and Titan AE as well as in the reality show Superstar USA .

2003 Lōc was represented on the album FeFe Dobson by Fefe Dobson with the rap for Rock It, Till You Drop It . In 2012 the album Tone Lōc & Friends was released .
